When I heard about Lara Hogan’s career celebration process of eating a donut to be “deliberate about marking achievements,” I thought it was a fantastic idea! I tend to focus on all the things that I have yet to accomplish and then make myself feel bad for not accomplishing them.
I like the idea of taking a moment to celebrate an achievement instead of treating it like just another to-do item to tick off. Instead of donuts (since I eat sweets all the time) I’m going with manicures and give me an excuse to do something “fancy.” I wrote a little more about it here but this is my archive page for my manicure/career celebrations!
It's #celebratorymani time! This time I went with a friend.👯When I started freelancing full-time, I worked out my "need to make" number and my “want to make" number. Well, I hit my WANT number this month! 🎉 For too long, I accepted way less pay than I should have. Partially because I thought doing meaningful work meant I couldn’t care about making money. And partially because I was reluctant to ask for more. I felt like I was being too “demanding.” But when I realized that working for less was not noble and that I deserved to make what my peers were making, I asked for more. The outcome wasn’t quite what I expected. And I realized feeling valued was more the just the dollar amount. But, the way people react to your dollar amount can show how they value you, your services, experience, knowledge or what you can bring to the table. Especially if what you’re asking for is just to be equal to your peers! It doesn’t mean that I still don’t have to deal with people trying to get me to work more for less but hitting this goal is significant because it’s a reminder that I can do meaningful work, earn what I’m worth and feel valued.
Finally got a chance to get my celebratory manicure! Got some great positive feedback from my career planning workshop (05/05/2016) and a talk about constructive feedback for a Microsoft Open Source event (05/07/2016). And now I have one more to add. I was on a panel last night for Girl Geeks Toronto. (But I actually got this manicure right before the panel 😛) And also, no more pink eye! Woot. #celebratorymani
When I heard about Lara Hogan's (larahogan.me/donuts/) career celebration process of eating a donut for each achievement to be "deliberate about marking achievements" I thought it was a fantastic idea. So I'm going to start marking my achievements with a manicure! I have two to celebrate so I chose two colors. 4/18/2016 Got a contract to do some teacher training. 4/23/2016 First Coffee with Christina session was a success! #celebratorymani
